988 – Hello (again), world!
My site based on WordPress went dead all of a sudden. Apparently it was a database issue. “Holy crap”, my shout burst in the silence of the night, “I just lost a whole year of blogs.”
Those who are familiar with my blogs probably remember the unique way I organize them: They are numbered. From the very first entry I wrote in December 2014 to this day, there have been more than one thousand posts. The numbering, however, did not start in 2006 (and it had a few hiccups). If everything had been alright, I should be writing my 988-th entry now. Over the year, some fifty blogs were written and now gone. They were beautiful songs and poems of my life. It was like a hole in my spacesuit, the memory suddenly sucked up into the vacum of the universe.
For a while, I was not sure what to do. I felt helpless. Not a soul (not even mine perhaps) in the office corridor. Not a sound. Outside was pitch dark and I could imagine the chilly midnight breeze would haunt me on my way biking home.
And it indeed did.
Lying in bed I stared at the blank ceiling, which all of a sudden appeared so afar and immense. Something were lost, for sure, but the sense of losing somethign was only slowly emerging to me, like the ocean tides slowly turning fierce. At any moment, I knew I would be engulfed. At any moment, I would fall asleep.
Saddened enough, I decided to switch to jekyll so here we go.
Update: Thanks to Marcin, the lost blog entries are partially retrieved from Google cache! Bravo! (It is also, on the other hand, terrifying to realize that almost everything is archived on the internet…)
That is why now I have several entries numbered before 987.
